The Cleack project

This project originates in our meeting with Atracsys LLC.

Atracsys manufactures tracking devices for the medical industry and was a speaker at BaselWorld 2007.

The goal with the Cleack project is to demonstrates how working together in the organization of events can be beneficial In this particular case, our target is at show presentations at BaselWorld for well-known brands of clockmakers to which we offer content creation that is both interactive and attractive.

Project principle

A camera is shooting a series of extreme close-ups around a digital clock. These shots are designed to enhance the beauty of the clock pieces and mechanism. The user can take control of the camera any time in order to check for himself how sophisticated the mechanism is.

The user can select a great variety of view points, just as a photographer would do with his camera.

Design

For this project, Bleank has designed and modelized an original clock. We have chosen to propose a design which would blend modern and classic clock mechanisms, without referring to any existing clockmaker's work in particular.

Various materials are used, from brushed metal to nacreous plastic (such as the IPod's).

Design of the clock

Rendering of the clock without materials

Works of the clock

From a technical point of view, the biggest challenge for us has been to create a depth of field effect which would come as close as possible to reality while maintaining a suitable frame rate.

The scene itself can be lit by natural light sources without distinction since we have been making use of HDRI images as light sources.

This technique adds to the realism of the final rendering  and imparts a characteristic brightness to it. It is used in the movie industry  to get a better integration of synthetic image elements in real shooting sequences.

Our Harmony technology also allows to simulate the eye sensitivity to bright light, with natural adaptation and illumination effects.

Conclusion

This project allows to show that real-time rendering competes with synthetic image rendering. It offers greater freedom of use and compelling appeal  in order to more effectively gain the audience/users' attention by offering them to participate in a unique experience.
